A cunning con artist, Martha Hicks, escapes from prison and seeks refuge at her estranged husband's Wisconsin spa hotel, adopting a new persona to alleviate her rheumatism symptoms.

A con artist, known as Countess von Claudwig, is released from prison and seeks treatment for her rheumatism at her estranged husband's hotel in a Wisconsin spa. While there, she secretly visits her two abandoned infant daughters, who are now grown and dealing with their own romantic issues. The older daughter wants to marry a kind man, but her suitor's father disapproves of the match, seeking a wealthier partner instead. The younger daughter has become involved with a hoodlum. Despite denying any familial ties, the Countess uses her cunning to help her family find their way and evade the detective pursuing her.
