A prisoner of war returns to Pennsylvania, struggling to overcome the horrors of his Japanese captivity, as he navigates a complicated web of emotions and redefines his future amidst the ruins of his past.

Ivan Bibic returns to his Pittsburgh suburb after surviving a Japanese POW camp, haunted by nightmares. He rekindles his childhood love with Maria Bosic, a fellow ethnic Yugoslavian, but struggles with psychological trauma. Despite getting married, Ivan becomes impotent and feels unworthy of Maria. Meanwhile, a charismatic musician named Clarence Butts moves in and seduces Maria, threatening their relationship.
