A country western singer returns to his rural hometown in the Carolina hills, where he finds himself caught in a battle between moonshine runners fighting for their independence and ruthless federal agents determined to crack down on their operation.

Doug Martin, a popular TV singer, returns to the Carolina hills to rediscover his roots. He meets the Carpenters and Bashams, two families involved in moonshining, and falls in love with Laura Carpenter. However, his engagement to Della Lawrence is complicated by his new feelings. Meanwhile, Sheriff Potter and his accomplices, including the ape-like Luther Basham, are involved in a series of violent and comedic events.
