Yotaro, an 8-year-old boy, gains a 3-year-old step-sister, Kaoru, when his mother marries a jazz musician. As they navigate their new life together, their father deserts them, and Yotaro's mother falls terminally ill. Her final wish is for Yotaro to watch over Kaoru at his grandmother's island home. Thirteen years later, Kaoru returns to Naha and begins high school, and Yotaro works tirelessly to save money for his own restaurant while supporting Kaoru's education.
