In 1980 West Germany, Frank Lehmann is forced to join the Bundeswehr after neglecting to object to the draft. He moves in with a group of hippie squatters in his hometown of Bremen, where his outspoken nature and naivety often land him in trouble. Despite this, Frank finds himself standing up for a fellow soldier who is considering desertion, earning him respect from his comrades. However, back in his hometown, pacifists criticize him for serving in the military, unaware of his reluctant enlistment. The situation is further complicated by events at the Berlin Wall.
