Two men, Leo Harrigan, a lawyer, and Tom "Buck" Greenway, a snake-oil salesman, accidentally get involved in the early days of filmmaking in 1911. Despite having no experience, they take on roles as a scenarist, director, editor, and action actor, respectively, working for independent producer H.H. Cobb. As they navigate the industry, they face challenges from the Patents Company, which is trying to monopolize the business by denying camera use to smaller companies. Meanwhile, Leo and Buck fall in love with Kathleen Cooke, a klutzy Chautauqua girl, and their personal and professional lives are affected by their love for her and the evolving film industry over a four-year period.
