The movie follows the lives of William Spence, a Methodist minister, and his wife Hope, who leave their comfortable life in Central Canada to start anew in rural Iowa in the early 20th century. Despite the challenges, they build a life together, have three children, and move frequently as William is assigned to different parishes across the United States. Throughout their journey, Hope supports William's decisions, even when they require great sacrifices. However, she longs to settle into one place, providing a sense of belonging for their children. They eventually find a sense of stability in Denver after the war, but William faces a new challenge as the congregation's wealth and sense of entitlement clash with his vision of spreading God's teachings.
