Paris Trout, a ruthless and discriminatory Southern businessman, uses his store as a front for loansharking and often takes people to court. His lawyer, Harry Seagraves, becomes acquainted with Paris's wife, Hannah, a former schoolteacher who made a grave mistake by marrying the abusive Paris. As Paris's behavior becomes increasingly brutal, he pushes the boundaries of what is acceptable even in the segregated South, leading to a downward spiral of madness.
