A semi-fictionalized account of Al Schmid's life during World War II. Al, a foundry worker, lives with his friend Jim, his wife Ella Mae, and their teenage daughter Loretta. Despite Ella Mae's attempts to set him up, Al remains a bachelor, but eventually falls in love with Jim's friend Ruth after a disastrous blind date. They get engaged before Al joins the US Marines and fights in the Battle of Guadalcanal, where he is blinded by a grenade. Al initially plans to keep his blindness a secret from Ruth, but a Red Cross worker named Virginia helps him to come to terms with his new reality and consider telling Ruth the truth.

A decorated marine, Al Schmid, returns home from battle, his life forever changed by the loss of his sight, but with the unwavering support of his loved one, he adapts to his new civilian life and discovers a new sense of purpose.
