A young woman named Yin Yin illegally immigrates to the USA from communist China, hoping to make a better life for herself and her family. After a treacherous journey, she arrives in New York City, only to be sold into the sex slave trade by a gang. Yin Yin is forced to work as a prostitute at the Shanghai Hotel, where she is isolated and locked in a room. She finds solace in a kind-hearted bike messenger, Carlos, with whom she develops a friendship and eventually a romance through passing notes.
