Famed American symphony conductor John Meredith tours Soviet Russia with his manager, where they visit a small rural town where Tchaikovsky was born. John meets Nadya, a peasant girl with a talent for classical music, and they marry. As war breaks out, John wants to flee to the USA, but Nadya insists on staying to defend their village against the advancing Germans.
