Al, a struggling promoter, discovers a talented singing porter named Jan and decides to mentor him. Despite financial struggles, Al works hard to fund Jan's singing lessons, abandoning his own opera ambitions when he realizes it will take years to achieve. Jan's star rises after a successful nightclub performance, but he eventually becomes unreliable, missing rehearsals and succumbing to alcoholism. The partnership between Al and Jan eventually ends, leaving Jan jobless. Al, still believing in Jan's potential, pays a professor to take him to Italy in hopes of reviving his opera dreams.
