Boston native Jeff Bauman, a deli counter worker, lives with his mother in a small apartment. He reunites with his ex-girlfriend Erin, who is running in the Boston Marathon to raise money for the hospital where she works. Jeff promises to wait for her at the finish line with a big sign, but just before she arrives, a bomb explodes, amputating both of his legs above the knee.
