Tarnation background

Tarnation

A 19-year journey of self-discovery is revealed through a unique blend of personal home movies, recordings, and historical footage, as the director shares their intimate experience of living with a mother struggling with schizophrenia.

A film that blends documentary, narrative fiction, and personal footage to create a powerful portrait of an American family's dark history. It follows Jonathan, who learns his mother, Renee, has overdosed on her medication, and is forced to confront the family's legacy of trauma, including rape, addiction, and abuse. Through his journey, Jonathan finds solace in musical theater and a queer support network, and eventually comes to terms with his complicated relationship with his mother.
