Philadelphia's Prudence Budell, a classically trained soprano, returns from Europe after five years and is sponsored by her grandmother to lead an opera company under maestro Jose Iturbi. However, Prudence feels uneasy sharing the stage with tenor Guido Russino Betelli. After discovering American-Italian truck driver Johnny Donnetti's hidden opera talent, Prudence convinces Iturbi to give him a chance. As they fall in love, Prudence visits Johnny's workplace to inform him of his new role, only to find his colleague Mary and assume Johnny is in love with her.
