In 1840s Boston, the death of old man Flagg leaves behind only debts. His grandson, Jack Flagg, dreams of escaping home to seek gold in California and boards a ship, but his sister Arabella discovers his absence and launches a frantic search. Jack meets a crooked judge and other characters on the ship, but is joined by his loyal butler, Bullwhip Griffin, who has followed him. They arrive in San Francisco, immersing themselves in the chaos of the gold rush. Jack's sister Arabella decides to follow them to California, determined to find her brother and their butler.
