Dr. Ludwig Guttmann, a refugee from Nazi Germany, arrives at Stoke Mandeville hospital and is shocked to find patients with spinal injuries heavily sedated and neglected. He implements a new regime, replacing outdated equipment and sedatives, which sparks conflict with hospital staff and patients. However, his approach is validated when Sister Edwards sees the positive impact on the patients, who are treated as individuals and encouraged to participate in musical and sporting activities. This leads to the hospital becoming a hub for spinal patients, and eventually, Dr. Guttmann's work inspires the establishment of the Paralympic Games.
