In 1968 New York City, a group of friends gather for a raucous birthday party hosted by Michael, a screenwriter who spends and drinks too much, to celebrate his friend Harold. The partygoers include Donald, Michael's former flame, Larry, a randy commercial artist, and others. What begins as an evening of drinks and laughter takes a turn when Alan, Michael's straight-laced college roommate, unexpectedly arrives, forcing each man to confront long-buried truths that threaten the group's tight bond.
