Carla, a 17-year-old, spends the summer in East Berlin with her estranged historian father, Hugh, in an old hotel that was once a butcher shop. She discovers a mysterious wardrobe with a mirror, which shows her visions of a young girl who lived in the hotel during the 1930s. The girl helped a Jewish dissident hide from the Gestapo in the shop's cold room, but her father, a Nazi supporter, brutally raped her nightly. As Carla becomes trapped in these horrific visions, she struggles to distinguish reality from fantasy and fears her own father.
