The film takes place in 1936 in a small town in Andalusia, Spain, where a tailor and town councilor, Higinio, is hiding from Franco's soldiers after the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War. He is eventually caught and escapes, but hides in a secret hole in his own house. His wife, Rosa, takes charge of her father-in-law's sewing shop, but their life becomes complicated when she is raped and Higinio kills her attacker.
