Wealthy Cecil Fox, a major patron of Venice, advertises for a personal secretary. Among the many qualified applicants, he chooses struggling actor William McFly, who suspects the job is not what it seems. Fox reveals the true purpose: McFly will be the stage manager for a play in his palazzo, where he, McFly, and three unwitting others will act out a real-life scenario. As Fox, on his deathbed, reunites with three former lovers, each believing she'll inherit his vast estate, McFly must improvise and navigate the complex web of relationships and motives.
