Two navy lifers, Buddusky and Mulhall, are tasked with escorting a young thief, Meadows, to the brig in Portsmouth. Meadows, a late teenager, is sentenced to eight years in prison for stealing forty dollars from the admiral's wife's charity. The journey starts as a paid vacation for the two lifers, but Meadows's low self-image and tears bring them down. Buddusky decides to teach Meadows a lesson, showing him how to have fun, drink, and learn about lovemaking. However, their fun is short-lived as reality sets in when they reach Portsmouth.
