The Laureate is set in 1920s Britain, following the life of young poet Robert Graves, who is married with four children. He meets and falls in love with American writer Laura Riding, and they begin a romantic relationship while living with his wife. The situation becomes complicated when Irish poet Geoffrey Phibbs joins them, leading to tensions and rivalries that eventually lead Graves to be suspected of attempted murder.
