A young screenwriter, Peter Appleton, is on the verge of success in 1951 Hollywood, but his career is derailed when a Communist meeting from his college days is discovered. He's accused of being a communist and his contract is canceled. After a night of drinking and a car accident, Peter wakes up on the beach of a small town called Lawson, where he's mistaken for a man who went missing in World War II. As he tries to adjust to his new life, he falls in love with the man's girlfriend and helps rebuild the town's movie palace, but his past eventually catches up with him.
