A former mental patient, with a history of violence, is released from the institution against medical advice and returns to his old neighborhood. However, he soon finds the pressures of city life overwhelming and decides to escape to a small coastal town. He takes up residence at a local motel and develops feelings for the owner's daughter, but his new life is threatened when her father becomes suspicious of his troubled past.
