In Central California, a hitchhiker named Dan Flynn helps a drunk driver, Ben Monks, and is offered a job on his farm by Ben's wife, Angela. As Dan works on the farm, he becomes attracted to Angela and learns that Ben lied about having millions of dollars worth of oil on the farm. When Dan tries to intercede when Ben is whipping his horse, Ben attacks him and Dan punches him back. As tensions escalate, Ben discovers that Angela is having an affair with Dan and hits her. Later, Dan finds Ben dead and is accused of his murder.
