The Silence of the Sea background

The Silence of the Sea

In a small French town under Nazi occupation, a German officer forms an unlikely bond with an elderly man and his niece, leading to a complex and nuanced exploration of human relationships.

In a small town in Nazi-occupied France, a German officer, Lt. Werner von Ebrennac, is billeted in a house with an elderly uncle and his adult niece against their will. Despite their initial reluctance, the uncle and niece go about their daily lives, but remain silent and unresponsive to the officer's presence. The officer, a composer and musician, develops a routine of visiting the couple in the evenings, sharing his love of culture, national pride, and hopes for a future France. He makes no demands, expecting no response, and gradually wins over the hearts of his reluctant hosts.
