Denny Colt, a detective, fakes his own death to exploit the freedom from police constraints. He transforms an abandoned tomb into his secret hideout and becomes the Spirit, a crime-fighter in a blue suit, fedora, and eye mask. His first challenge is battling P'Gell, a cunning femme fatale with sinister plans for the city.
