A group of friends in Bikini Bottom create a time machine to retrieve the secret Krabby Patty formula, which has gone missing, and inadvertently travel to a series of bizarre locations, including a time paradox where they meet a wise dolphin named Bubbles. Along the way, they learn they've been duped by Plankton's fake formula, and the town's inhabitants attempt to destroy SpongeBob. However, the group's pursuit of Krabby Patties leads them to the surface, where they discover a pirate selling the iconic sandwiches. The friends decide to use a magical book to become superheroes and battle the pirate, while Plankton also writes himself as a superhero.
