In 1818, England, a tontine lottery is set up by 20 parents, who each contribute £1000. The last surviving boy wins the entire sum, now worth over £12 million today. As the years pass, the group dwindles until only two elderly brothers remain by 1882. One brother is cared for by his scheming nephews, who will stop at nothing to keep him alive. The other brother, living in poverty and poor health, relies on his confused grandson for support, in this darkly comedic tale.
