Sixteen-year-old Hal Ditmar, son of a wealthy Beverly Hills family, struggles with his father's emotional absence due to his focus on work. Hal's rebellion manifests in belligerent behavior towards strangers, which leads to a minor altercation and ultimately a charge of assault. Despite admitting to starting the incident, Hal claims self-defense. As Sgt. Shipley investigates, Hal's father tries to prevent a criminal record by using his connections, while punishing Hal at home, further alienating him. The case becomes a breaking point for the father-son relationship, threatening to either bring them closer together or tear them apart forever.
