In the 1940s, Colonel Dufort and his wife arrive in Timbuktu to take over the French garrison, only to face a Tuareg uprising supposedly inspired by a holy man, Mohamet Adjani. However, things take a complicated turn when the colonel's wife becomes involved in an affair with an American gunrunner, Mike Conway. As they journey to Bou Djebeha, Conway discovers that the holy man has been kidnapped by an evil emir, who is the mastermind behind the rebellion. The duo must navigate treacherous circumstances to rescue the holy man and bring him back to Timbuktu to quell the uprising.
