Marcus DeVol, a civilian aristocrat, joins the military as captain of the hybridized destroyer spacecraft Chimera, with a crew of questionable experience and reliability. Initially tasked with hunting pirates, Marcus and his crew are sent on a perilous mission far from home, testing Marcus' leadership abilities and forcing him to confront his own self-doubt.
