Dr. Ren Amari, a brilliant scientist, develops a revolutionary nanotech drug allowing users to upload memories. She co-founded Otherlife with her friend Sam to help her comatose brother, Jared. As the demo deadline looms, Sam pushes Ren and engineer Byron to fix software glitches. Meanwhile, Ren's boyfriend Danny, an Otherlife employee, accidentally uses the experiment on Jared, killing him. Sam proposes Ren take a virtual year in a "prison" to avoid real-world punishment, and she reluctantly agrees. After the year, Ren finds herself trapped in a real prison, betrayed by Sam and Byron, and discovers Danny is alive.
