Border City, a town on the Missouri-Arkansas border, claims neutrality during the Civil War, but is actually torn between the North and South. The town is home to a saloon and hotel run by Sally Maris' brother, who has requested her arrival. However, their stagecoach journey is disrupted by Quantrill's Raiders, who kill Union soldiers and escort the stagecoach into town. The James brothers, Charles Quantrill, and his wife Kate are among the Raiders. The town's mayor, who owns the region's largest lead mines, decides to call in the Union forces to remove the Raiders, but both sides are eager to capture the mines for their armament industry.
