In 18th-century Minas Gerais, Portugal's diamond and gold mining operations were marked by corruption. João Fernandes de Oliveira, a powerful representative of the Crown, arrives with a lucrative contract, but his excesses soon catch up with him. Meanwhile, Xica, a slave with unparalleled sexual appeal, captures the attention of João and later finds refuge with José, a radical thinker, who sees her as a symbol of Brazil's unbridled spirit.
