Transatlantic background

Transatlantic

A courageous American journalist risked everything to rescue over 2,000 refugees from certain death during the tumultuous years of World War II.

Varian Fry, armed with $3,000 and a list of endangered artists and writers, traveled to Marseille in 1940 with a mission to rescue them. However, he ended up staying for over a year, utilizing his skills to secure false documents, raise funds, and facilitate crossings to safer ports for his clients, which included notable figures such as Hannah Arendt, Max Ernst, Marcel Duchamp, and Marc Chagall.
