On a freight train, he befriends Jess, a tenderfoot from Philadelphia, and together they witness a murder. When Jess is accused of the crime, Gannon reveals the true killer and claims the reward. They settle in Union Wells, where Gannon takes a job at the Cross ranch, owned by the widow Beth.
