Silvio Corbari, a charismatic partisan leader, begins his journey by killing a fascist friend in public. He then establishes an independent partisan band in northern Italy, separate from the Italian organized resistance. Corbari's personal life becomes entwined with his lover, Ines, who leaves her husband to join the group. He successfully creates a free zone, his personal republic, in the village of Tregnano, independent from Nazi-occupied Italy. However, the Nazi-Fascist army proves too strong, and Corbari's partisan friends are captured and sentenced to death. Ines, fearing capture, takes her own life, and Corbari barely survives a first hanging attempt but ultimately meets his demise in a second execution. Despite his tragic end, Corbari is posthumously awarded a gold medal from the Italian Republic in recognition of his bravery.
