A high-ranking Austrian Imperial Guard officer spends a night of indulgence at a luxurious brothel, where he becomes enchanted with a beautiful young woman named Laura, and leaves her a generous gift.

In this tragic tale, a young Austrian lieutenant named Willi spends a night with a innocent girl named Laura, leaving her a generous sum of money in the morning. However, he soon realizes that he used her as a mere convenience and that she has become the mistress of a wealthy but unpleasant gentleman. As Willi's obsession with Laura grows, he is goaded into a high-stakes game of chance with her new lover, only to emerge deeply in debt. With no way to repay his losses, Willi is faced with a devastating choice: either pay his debt or take his own life.
