A retired investigator is summoned to unravel a series of inexplicable murders that imperil the coronation of Empress Wu in ancient China.

In ancient China, Empress Wu Zetian commissions a massive Buddha statue, but her plans are threatened by conspiracy and superstition. Mysterious deaths plague the construction site, including the engineer who removed good luck charms from the main pillar. As the investigation unfolds, Empress Wu assigns her loyal assistant to free the exiled Detective Dee, who teams up with her and another investigator to unravel the mystery.
