The Ross brothers, Dick and Carey, travel through post-Civil War era Canada, with Dick often saving Carey from his own trouble. When Carey gets caught cheating in a poker game, they flee to Canada to evade capture. Dick decides they should join the newly formed North West Mounted Police, who need skilled horsemen familiar with Indian ways to maintain peace between the Blackfoot and the Sioux. However, news arrives that Sitting Bull, a Sioux leader, has entered Canada to evade capture, and the police hope Chief Crowfoot will keep the peace. Dick is aware that Carey killed a Sioux on their way north, threatening the peace, and must decide how long to defend his brother, as it may lead to an Indian uprising.
