Joe Palooka, a heavyweight champion, and his friend Humphrey Pennyworth stumble upon a murdered gambler near their training camp. As they flee, the killers open fire, but miraculously, neither is hit. Despite the lack of evidence, the case goes cold when the body can't be found. A gangster then blackmails Joe's manager, Knobby Walsh, to throw the upcoming title defense, and to ensure compliance, Joe is secretly drugged before the fight.
