A struggling playwright, Josh Jarman, is proud of his long, serious play about love and heartache. Despite his efforts, producers reject it, citing its length and seriousness. Josh meets Sasha, another playwright, and they develop a relationship. A producer, Stan Billows, is interested in producing Josh's play, but only if Josh continues to see his daughter, Sasha. However, the changes Billows and the director want to make to the play compromise its artistic integrity, leaving Josh to choose between commercial success and staying true to his art.
