Joseph, an 11-year-old boy, wears a yellow star on his chest as he attends school in occupied Paris. He receives support from a goods dealer, but faces mockery from a baker. Amidst kindness and contempt, Joseph and his Jewish friends learn about life on the Butte Montmartre, where they've taken shelter. However, their fragile happiness is shattered on July 16th, 1942, when 13,000 Jews are crammed into the Vélodrome D'Hiver and eventually sent to the camp of Beaune-La-Rolande.
