In medieval times, Kohlhaas, a merchant with a valuable horse cargo, is compelled by a noble to leave behind a portion of his merchandise as payment for traversing his land. The noble promises to return the goods after the fair, but upon Kohlhaas' return, he finds his horses nearly exhausted and the noble unresponsive to his demands for justice.
