A young mother, Maria, lives with her 7-year-old daughter Joana in poverty. Maria asks the local priest to accompany her to the hospital to pick up the results of Joana's exam. Despite Joana's pleas to go with her mother, Maria insists on leaving her with the priest, fearing the worst about her daughter's health. The priest entertains Joana by telling her the story of Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ, who dedicated her life to her son.
