Based on a true story, an unlikely friendship blossoms between a mountaineer and the Dalai Lama as they navigate the tumultuous invasion of Tibet by China.

Austrian mountaineer Heinrich Harrer, played by Brad Pitt, embarks on a treacherous climb of Nanga Parbat in British India, leaving his pregnant wife behind. After the climb, he and his team are arrested and imprisoned in a POW camp during World War II. Harrer eventually escapes and finds refuge in the forbidden city of Lhasa, where he befriends the Dalai Lama and becomes immersed in Tibetan culture.
