Sergeant Hap Doan, heartbroken over the mechanization of his beloved Nineteenth Cavalry, goes on a drinking binge. Despite his initial reluctance, he helps train a group of new draftees into capable soldiers. After his horse, Cantigny, is killed in a tank explosion, Hap goes AWOL and is court-martialed, receiving a dishonorable discharge. However, he is secretly tasked by his commanding officer to infiltrate a gang of German spies who believe they can trust the disgruntled ex-sergeant.
