As the final stretch of the trans-Alaska railroad project approaches, a veteran railroad worker, Murray O'Neil, finds himself in a intense rivalry with Curtis Gordon, a cunning and determined competitor, to be the first to complete the historic task.

In this movie, an engineer named Dan Appleton is hired by a railroad magnate to design a route to rich gold country, but his plan is rejected in favor of the magnate's own route. Appleton quits and is hired by a rival builder, who falls in love with Appleton's sister. Meanwhile, Appleton courts the magnate's stepdaughter and helps the rival builder complete the route, overcoming opposition and obstacles to achieve success and romance.
